Cultural introduction

Chinese New Year is one of the most significant festivals in Chinese culture, marking the start of the lunar calendar. The Year of the Snake, which will begin on January 29, 2025, is a symbol of wisdom, mystery, and transformation.

During Chinese New Year, families typically clean their homes to sweep away bad luck and make space for good fortune. They decorate with red symbols, lanterns, and couplets that represent wealth and happiness. People often gather for a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, where they share symbolic foods like dumplings and fish for prosperity. Many also give red envelopes filled with money to children and singles, a gesture to bring good luck.

One of the most beloved traditions during the Lunar New Year is fortune stick telling (Kau Cim), a practice that dates back to ancient times. Typically performed in temples, Kau Cim involves shaking a container filled with bamboo sticks, each marked with a number. When a stick falls out, the number is matched to a fortune, offering guidance and predictions for the year ahead. This ritual is especially significant during the New Year, as it symbolises the desire for insight, protection, and blessings. For many, it is a way to seek direction for the months ahead, whether in matters of health, wealth, or relationships. The fortune might offer reassuring predictions or advice, but it always carries the message of growth and reflection.
