The Chinese Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year, marks the end of the Lunar New Year festivities. Lanterns are a central symbol of the festival, representing hope, prosperity, and the dispelling of darkness. Let’s create your own lantern in this fun workshop.

In our workshop, you’ll learn how to craft lantern and take home your own hand made lantern while experiencing the festival’s deep cultural roots.

Cultural introduction

The Chinese Lantern Festival (元宵节, Yuánxiāo Jié) is a joyful celebration marking the 15th day of the Lunar New Year and the first full moon of the year. Dating back over 2,000 years, this festival symbolises unity, harmony, and the hope for a bright future.

Lanterns are the heart of the festival. Traditionally, they were made of paper and illuminated with candles, but modern versions now feature intricate designs and LED lights. Each lantern represents a wish for good fortune, prosperity, and happiness. In some traditions, riddles are written on lanterns, and solving them brings luck and joy.

The Lantern Festival is also a time for families to gather, admire the stunning lantern displays, and enjoy festive foods like tangyuan—sweet glutinous rice balls that symbolise family unity and togetherness.

This festival not only honors cultural traditions but also celebrates light, new beginnings, and the connections we share with one another. It’s a magical night that lights up the sky with beauty and hope!
