The Spirit of Karaoke in Asia
Karaoke is more than just singing in Asia — it’s a beloved cultural ritual that blends fun, connection, and even business. From neon-lit karaoke boxes in Tokyo to plush KTV lounges in Seoul and all-night sessions in Taipei, karaoke is one of Asia’s favorite ways to unwind. Friends gather to belt out pop hits, coworkers bond over shared songs, and sometimes even business deals are sealed between verses and glasses of soju or beer. There’s a spirit of joyful vulnerability in karaoke — where no one’s judged, everyone cheers, and music becomes the common language.
In many East Asian cultures, singing together breaks the ice, strengthens relationships, and offers a release from the pressures of daily life. Whether you’re crooning a ballad or laughing through a duet, karaoke is where voices rise and barriers fall.
What Is The Occasion?
That’s why Dear Asia — the school of Asian languages and culture in London — is taking our teachers and students out for a karaoke social! This event is our way of bringing people together to share laughter, language, and culture. Come sing, connect, and experience the joy of learning together.
Is It Free?
It’s free to join our karaoke night — but just a heads up, the karaoke venue (an authentic Asian spot, of course!) usually has a minimum spend per room. The cost will go toward food and drinks, and at the end of the night, we’ll simply split the bill among attendees. Expect around £20–£40 per person depending on the group size.
What to Expect:
- Sing Your Heart Out 🎤: Grab the mic and belt out your favorite tunes—whether it’s K-pop bangers, J-pop anthems, or Glastonbury classics.
- Fun, Laughter, and Music 🎶: It’s all about enjoying great music, having fun, and meeting new people who share the love of singing!
- All are welcome 🤗: Whether you’re a queen / king of karaoke or a first-timer, everyone is welcome to join in the fun—no judgment, just pure enjoyment!

Cultural introduction
Karaoke, originating in Japan in the 1970s, has become a beloved pastime across Asia, with Japan, Korea, and China showcasing distinct styles.
Japan: As the birthplace of karaoke, Japan popularised karaoke boxes, private rooms where friends or coworkers can sing in a relaxed setting. It’s a staple of social and corporate bonding, with a focus on mutual respect and enjoyment.
South Korea: In Korea, noraebang (singing rooms) offers a lively experience with advanced sound systems, mood lighting, and tambourines. Popular for gatherings and stress relief, it often features K-pop hits and encourages group participation.
China: Chinese KTV venues are known for their luxury, with lavish rooms, gourmet menus, and diverse song selections. Karaoke sessions, often lasting hours, combine singing with dining and socializing, making it a favorite for family and business occasions.
Karaoke is a celebration of music, connection, and fun.
