Cultural introduction

Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, deeply rooted in Japan’s history and culture. Dating back to the Nara period, Furoshiki was initially used to protect valuable items in temples. Over time, it evolved into a practical and artistic method for carrying and wrapping everyday items, from clothing to gifts.

More than just a wrapping technique, Furoshiki reflects the Japanese principles of respect, thoughtfulness, and sustainability. The care taken to wrap a gift using Furoshiki symbolises the giver’s intention and attention to detail, making the wrapping just as important as the gift itself. The reusable cloth also embodies Japan’s strong cultural values around minimal waste and environmental consciousness, long before sustainability became a global concern.

Today, Furoshiki is not only a symbol of tradition but also a modern, eco-friendly alternative to disposable packaging, embraced worldwide for its elegance and versatility.
