About Mid Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, is a significant Chinese holiday celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, typically in September or October.
This festival is closely linked to family reunion, with the full moon symbolizing harmony and unity. A key tradition in China is eating mooncakes, round pastries filled with various fillings like lotus seed paste, red bean paste, or salted egg yolks. Families come together to enjoy these treats, share stories, and gaze at the full moon, making the festival a time of togetherness and connection.
You might not know that the Mid-Autumn Festival is also an important celebration in countries like Korea and Japan. In Korea, it is known as Chuseok (추석), one of the nation’s most significant holidays. During Chuseok, families honor their ancestors and give thanks for the harvest. Koreans mark the occasion by visiting ancestral graves and performing memorial rituals called “charye” (차례). Traditional foods play a major role in Chuseok celebrations, with “songpyeon” (송편), a rice cake with sweet fillings like sesame or red bean paste, and “jeon” (전), Korean pancakes, being some of the most popular dishes. These customs reflect the Korean emphasis on family, gratitude, and respect for tradition during this festive season.
In Japan, the Mid-Autumn Festival is called Tsukimi (月見), which means “moon viewing.” While not as widely celebrated as in China or Korea, Tsukimi is still significant in Japanese culture. The festival involves viewing the full moon, often with decorations like “susuki” (すすき), a type of pampas grass. Traditional foods include “tsukimi dango” (月見団子), small rice dumplings, and other seasonal treats.
